Saint Xavier Upsets Defending National Champion to Advance to Championship Match

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa [BOX SCORE]  - The Saint Xavier (Ill.) Cougars used a steadier offensive balance and a decisive late push in each tight set to take down The Master’s (Calif.) Mustangs 3–1 on Friday night at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Cougars improved to 31–3 by winning 25–23, 21–25, 25–19, 25–23 in a match that was essentially even by the totals, but swung on Saint Xavier’s ability to win the margins in the closing points.

The overall numbers show how narrow it was: Saint Xavier hit .317 on 123 swings with 53 kills, while The Master’s hit .314 on 118 swings with 54 kills. The difference came from when those kills arrived. After a back-and-forth opening set, Saint Xavier escaped 25–23 despite The Master’s actually hitting better in the frame (.324 to .257). The Master’s answered in set two behind its best offensive stretch of the night, posting a .423 hitting percentage and leveling the match with a 25–21 win as Saint Xavier’s efficiency dipped and the set stayed just out of reach late.

From there, Saint Xavier took control by forcing a pronounced offensive drop for The Master’s in the third. The Master’s hit only .115 in set three (nine kills, six errors), and Saint Xavier capitalized with a cleaner .308 clip to win 25–19. The fourth set returned to high-level sideout volleyball—The Master’s hit .379 and Saint Xavier was even sharper at .419—but Saint Xavier again owned the final moments to close 25–23 and avoid a fifth.

Individually, Saint Xavier’s attack was paced by Caydann Cox, who delivered 17 kills on 40 attempts while hitting .400 and added two aces and four total blocks to finish with 21.5 points. Tysen Myers was highly efficient, scoring 10 kills on 15 swings for a .600 attack percentage and contributing at the net as well. Donte Jennings chipped in eight kills, and Hayden Grange made the most of his opportunities with seven kills on 12 swings for a .500 mark. Setter Cameron Daniels ran the offense with 40 assists and added an ace, helping Saint Xavier produce its best offensive set in the clincher. Matt Pennala also contributed to the offense with nine kills.

For The Master’s, Isaac Seltzer was the match’s most prolific scorer, piling up 21 kills on 40 attempts while hitting .400 and adding two aces for 23 points. Andrew Karges added nine kills on a .368 clip, and Ezra Vlad was extremely efficient at .583 with eight kills while also factoring into four block assists. Trace Oswald also added nine kills. The Master’s offense was directed by Matthew Hamm, who finished with 44 assists and 13 digs.

Defense and ball control were similarly close, with The Master’s recording 51 digs to Saint Xavier’s 39, including 20 from libero Preston Schmidt, but Saint Xavier’s blocking presence and timely serving helped even out those extra possessions. Saint Xavier finished with eight block assists and one solo block, led by Cox and Grange, while The Master’s posted 10 block assists but couldn’t convert enough of the extended rallies into late-set separation.

With the loss, The Master's is eliminated from tournament play, while Saint Xavier returns to the championship to face Park (Mo.) on Saturday, May 2, at 5 p.m. CT.
